Explore the Royal Throne

On 9 October, the Royal Throne returns to Roermond. Designed by Pierre Cuypers, this throne is used by the King every year during Prinsjesdag (State Opening of Parliament). It is not only a symbol of craftsmanship, but also of Dutch democracy and the constitutional monarchy.

From October 2026, the Cuypershuis and the Spark Tech Lab will offer an educational programme for pupils in Years 1–8 of primary education and Years 7–8 (Grades 1–2) of secondary education. The programme consists of the following components:

Preparatory Workbook (including Teacher's Guide)

For: Years 5–8 (Primary Education)

The workbook prepares you and your class for your visit to the Spark Tech Lab and the Cuypershuis. Through playful activities, pupils learn more about topics such as Prinsjesdag, democracy, and, of course, the Royal Throne. The workbook includes a quiz, games and creative assignments.

Royal Throne Workshop

For: Years 1–8 (Primary Education) and Years 7–8 (Secondary Education)
Location: Spark Tech Lab
Duration: 120 minutes

At the Spark Tech Lab, pupils create their own throne.

  • Years 1–4: Build or assemble a throne through puzzle and woodworking activities.
  • Years 5–8: Create a linocut print or solder a miniature iron throne.
  • Secondary education: Design and make a "Power Seat"—a throne that reflects who they are and what they stand for.

Royal Throne Museum Lesson

For: Years 5–8 (Primary Education) and Years 7–8 (Secondary Education)
Location: Cuypershuis
Duration: 45–60 minutes

Themes: Prinsjesdag, democracy, monarchy and the Royal Throne

During this museum lesson, a museum educator guides pupils through the exhibition From Maker to Majesty, where they discover how craftsmanship and democracy come together through the story of the Royal Throne.

This educational programme aligns with the following Dutch curriculum objectives:

  • Primary Education Core Objective 19 / Secondary Education Core Objective 20: Pupils learn about living together in a democratic society governed by the rule of law.
  • Primary Education Core Objective 37 / Secondary Education Core Objective 42: Pupils experience and engage with art and culture.

The combined programme, including visits to both the Spark Tech Lab and the Cuypershuis, can be booked for the period 26 October to 18 December via the Spark Tech Lab booking page. The preparatory workbook and teacher's guide are included.

This educational programme is offered free of charge to schools.
