March 3, 2021, marks exactly 100 years since the death of Cuypers, who was born and raised in Roermond. At the time, his funeral made national news. Ministers and other dignitaries, along with prominent figures from the arts, science, and the church, traveled to Limburg to accompany the renowned architect to his final resting place at the Oude Kerkhof in Roermond.
Cuypers Year honors Roermond’s most famous resident: Pierre Cuypers
The goal of Cuypers Year is to honor this man and to highlight Roermond’s significance in the fields of culture and entrepreneurship. The event will showcase the “multi-talented” Cuypers in various ways. During Cuypers Year 2021, activities will take place throughout the Roermond region, including exhibitions (at the Cuypershuis, the Historiehuis, the Streekmuseum Stevensweert, and the Limburgs Museum in Venlo), concerts, walking tours, special packages, an educational program for elementary schools, and, of course, the Cuypers Music Theater in December.
The following organizations are participating in the Cuypers Year: Cuypershuis, Limburgs Museum, Historiehuis, ECI Cultuurfabriek, De Oranjerie, Visit Noord- en Midden-Limburg, Limburg Marketing, Citymanagement Roermond, Stichting Gastvrij Roerdalen Wassenberg, Stichting Open Monumentendag, the Oude Kerkhof Foundation, the Stevensweert / Ohé en Laak Regional Museum, and the Royal Harmony of Roermond.
