The Cuypershuis in Roermond will begin reconstruction of the ceiling next week. During the process, several key steps will be taken, such as the removal of the current suspended ceiling, the modification of existing fire protection and electrical wiring, the application of stucco and decorative moldings, and the final painting using stencils. Completion is expected by the end of February 2020. Visitors can follow the process through a special viewing window in the Cuypershuis’s permanent exhibition.
Claudia Junge of the Stichting Restauratie Atelier Limburg, who is also responsible for the paintings at the Rijksmuseum, conducted research into the colors used. The final reconstruction of the ceiling will be carried out by students in the “Decorative and Restoration Painting” program at SintLucas in Boxtel. Through this collaboration, knowledge about Cuypers’ decorations is also being passed on to the next generation of restorers. The reconstruction will cost a total of €40,000.
The Ceiling
Prior to his marriage to Antoinette in 1859, Cuypers had his home reupholstered and redecorated. The original design of his living room included a beautifully painted ceiling incorporating the monograms “PC” and “AT.” Celtic and medieval motifs adorn the decorative design.
