Young People as Creators of the Future
In the run-up to the exhibition, young people take center stage. At Spark Tech Lab Roermond, elementary and secondary school students are working on their own thrones. They learn to design, create, and collaborate, thereby discovering Cuypers’s legacy. For many young people, this is their first introduction to technology, craftsmanship, and constitutional law.
Alderman Vincent Zwijnenberg emphasizes how special it is that the tradition of craftsmanship continues to thrive in Roermond. The Swalm & Roer Foundation, the coordinating body for Spark Tech Lab Midden-Limburg, also views the Throne as a powerful educational tool that connects technology, creativity, and democracy.
In addition, the Cuypershuis is collaborating with students from Gilde Opleidingen and Maastricht University. They are delving into Cuypers’ craftsmanship, film, contemporary design, and the constitutional significance of the Throne.
Amsterdam, the Rijksmuseum, and new art
The start of the preparations was marked by a visit from Erik van Ginkel, Executive Director of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Artist Daniel Heynen is creating a new artwork specifically for this occasion to mark the arrival of the Throne in Roermond. He also donated a work to the Rijksmuseum inspired by the Vondelkerk, a building designed by Cuypers that was recently damaged by fire.
The visit underscores the close ties between the Rijksmuseum and the Cuypershuis. The museums have been collaborating for some time on collections and loans.
