Cuypers Music Theater

19 July 2023

Dr. Pierre Cuypers. Chief Architect of the Netherlands. Initially beloved. Later reviled. Not least because of his unshakable faith—in his work and his church. His spirit still lingers in his beloved Roermond. From his pedestal on Munsterplein, he reflects on his life with the wisdom of hindsight, in a witty and thought-provoking manner. His great loves, his drive to work, the new era in which he caused a sensation, the tragedies that shaped him, the legacy he left behind. An eventful life story that came to an end in 1921—and which, in 2023, is being given a fresh, new twist.

A Contemporary Tribute

A little over a century after his death, director Bart Segers and producer Henk Sillen invite you on an exciting journey through the life of this inspiring architect and extraordinary artist.

Together with Muziektheater Cuypers, they present a contemporary tribute to the grand master of Neo-Gothic architecture, who breathed new life into Dutch architecture in the nineteenth century. The Cuypers House, the School of Drawing, and the renovation of the Munster Church in Roermond; the Rijksmuseum and Central Station in Amsterdam; De Haar Castle in Utrecht; and more than a hundred churches. These are just a few examples of his impressive legacy, which is being celebrated at home and abroad with a posthumous rehabilitation of the master’s reputation.

A New Take

Muziektheater Cuypers presents Cuypers’ life story in a new light. Performed by a top-notch cast of professionals, up-and-coming talents, and amateurs, who take a lighthearted look back at Cuypers’ life. A unique theatrical and musical experience, supported by modern sets, visual effects, and exciting choreography. At times intimate, at times atmospheric and captivating. Muziektheater Cuypers also has the honor of opening the new theater season at the completely renovated Theater De Oranjerie in Roermond, Cuypers’ hometown. In short, a surprising production you won’t want to miss.
