Roermond breathes Cuypers. With his unique home, the Cuypershuis, the Art School, the renovation of the Musterkerk, and countless other remarkable heritage sites, we in Roermond are surrounded by his unique legacy. With the Cuypers collection—which is of national importance—and the Cuypershuis museum, Roermond has a real treasure on its hands. Under the new vision for the future, the Cuypershuis will become a museum that appeals to a broad audience with interesting exhibitions of national significance. The goal is to manage and exhibit an important collection, thereby further establishing Roermond as a city of culture. This vision aligns with the municipality’s previous visions, such as the Roermond Culture Workshop 2023–2026 and the Heritage Vision 2024–2030.
Unique programming, a collection of national significance
Alderman Vincent Zwijnenberg (cultural institutions): “The Cuypershuis must become a cultural gathering place for our city, featuring a collection of national significance, through which Roermond will further establish itself as a major cultural city.”
The museum aims to develop engaging programming for a broad audience, drawing inspiration from the legacy of Pierre Cuypers. A major milestone will be the exhibition of the Royal Throne in 2026. The museum is putting together a special program in collaboration with educational institutions and the Rijksmuseum. The Cuypershuis will also strengthen its ties with the Rijksmuseum. Pierre Cuypers designed the Rijksmuseum in 1876.
Internal Privatization as the Path Forward
The municipality has considered various scenarios for the museum’s future, including a visitor center, internal and external privatization, and even the liquidation of the museum, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2032. After careful consideration, the decision was made to pursue internal autonomy. Alderman Zwijnenberg: “This scenario strikes a balance between cultural entrepreneurship and maintaining municipal ownership of the building and the collection. It enables the museum to operate more effectively and generate its own revenue, while the municipality retains control over a significant part of Roermond’s heritage.”
City Council to Decide on Additional Budget
The Roermond City Council will make a decision on the plans on May 28. However, this decision is contingent upon the allocation of additional funds, which can be determined as part of the broader administrative considerations within the regular process of the framework memorandum and budget. To realize the ambitions of the vision for the future, a structural increase in the operating budget of €400,000 per year is needed. Over the past two years, the municipality has already made a one-time investment to get the museum’s foundation in order. The additional structural funding starting in 2026 is needed to strengthen public participation, staffing, marketing (with a national scope), and fundraising. With this investment, Roermond can build a Cuypershuis that is ready for the future in the coming years.
