The founding of Munster Abbey—eight centuries ago—was significant for the town of Roermond and contributed to the city’s further development. The distinctive Munster Church, built in the Romanesque-Gothic style, is today the only visible remnant of the former Cistercian monastery. In the 19th century, the Munster Church underwent extensive restoration by architect Pierre Cuypers and was given its distinctive twin towers.
The exhibition “800 Years of the Munsterkerk” traces the church’s architectural history through architectural fragments, sketches, and original artifacts, as well as a reconstruction of the high altar and a scale model of the Munsterkerk. An animation allows visitors to experience the church’s history firsthand. Of course, Pierre Cuypers’ additions are also given full attention.
