The stencils of architect and designer Pierre Cuypers served as her inspiration and starting point. Using contemporary and traditional techniques, she sought to give form to the associations these stencils evoked in her.
The title of the exhibition refers to Marjan’s studio, where she works on her often experimental textile art. The name was deliberately chosen because it so perfectly captures her character and that of her work. “Akaratos” means “unconventional.”
Fascinated by textiles from an early age, she studied fashion at the Academy of Fine Arts in Maastricht and at ArtEZ in Arnhem. During this time, she developed a fascination for patterns and structures. As a textile artist, she attracted attention with her knitted vases during the “Meesterlijk” presentation at Dutch Design Week in 2010. Italian interior architect Rossana Orlandi and the New York clothing and accessories store “Anthropologie” were among her clients and thus provided a significant boost to her career.
The artworks were created in her own studio and in collaboration with specialized studios such as SteM in Sint-Niklaas, the Spark Lab in Rosmalen, and the Textile Museum in Tilburg.
