The Cuypershuis tells the story of architect and designer Pierre Cuypers (1827–1921), his ambition, vision, and work. The Cuypershuis is the very place where he lived and worked. From here, he built an enormous body of work that he shaped in his studio.
The renowned architect is best known as the designer of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam Central Station, De Haar Castle in Haarzuilens, and the restoration of the Ridderzaal in The Hague.
The exhibition at the Cuypershuis allows visitors to discover how Cuypers, through his personality, ambition, and modern entrepreneurial spirit, managed to secure and carry out these major commissions. The energy within this remarkable building is both visible and palpable, making a visit to the Cuypershuis an unforgettable and inspiring experience.
The Caspar Conijn studio in Amsterdam was commissioned to redesign the exhibition at the Cuypershuis. The studio has created exhibitions for institutions including the Hermitage Amsterdam and St. Petersburg, the Frans Hals Museum, the Onderwijsmuseum, and the Museum Prinsenhof in Delft.
To capture the “historical sensation” in the new presentation, the team incorporated historical imagery, letters, and quotes to evoke a sense of atmosphere, combined with the museum’s collection. Each room has been given its own theme and atmosphere. An introductory film, audio stations, and interactive elements ensure a multifaceted experience at the museum. Thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign, the ceiling of the Cuypers family’s former living room can once again be seen in all its glory.
