Decorative elements are a timeless stylistic feature across all cultures. Designers around the world use patterns, colors, and motifs to physically draw people into their world.
That is why the decorative pattern—in both historical and contemporary interiors—takes center stage in this new exhibition. In addition to an installation by Christie van der Haak—developed specifically for the Cuypershuis—the exhibition also highlights decorative elements in buildings, furniture, and interiors by architects and designers from the period 1900–1935.
Christie van der Haak (The Hague, 1950) and architect Pierre Cuypers (Roermond, 1827–1921) share a passion for incorporating decorative patterns into their interiors. In their designs, they consistently combine shapes and colors, patterns and ornaments to impart meaning and enrich the space. As a result, the interiors become timeless, impressive, and instantly recognizable total works of art.
Installation with Christie van der Haak
For the exhibition *The Wavy Line*, artist Christie van der Haak drew inspiration from architect Pierre Cuypers’ ornate design style and flowing signatures. Cuypers’ work is characterized by a neo-Gothic architectural style and distinctive ornamentation, which he applied both inside and outside his brick buildings.
Van der Haak allows viewers of her work to experience the effect that motifs, colors, and lines have on a space. Her intuitively designed kaleidoscopic patterns fill the entire space, from floor to ceiling, including interior objects and works of art.
