Patterns have existed throughout history and across all cultures. They enliven people’s living environments and create atmosphere. The patterns used by Pierre Cuypers in his work served as the inspiration for this exhibition by Daniël Heynen.

The complex patterns that Cuypers incorporated into his buildings serve as Heynen’s source of inspiration. He transforms bygone eras into contemporary compositions and gives them a fresh new look. His colorful illustrations add a modern twist to Cuypers’s classic work.

The creative influences of his parents provided fertile ground for his development. The city center of Roermond awakened his sense of history. But above all, he admires the architectural forms in Cuypers’ work. After completing his graphic design studies in Eindhoven, he now works as a graphic designer.

NEW LOOK

In the exhibition “NEW COAT,” Heynen juxtaposes his work with original images from Pierre Cuypers’ studios. An accompanying film offers insight into Heynen’s thought process and working methods. Heynen has created a scavenger hunt map for young visitors to help them discover his work and that of Cuypers.

Don’t forget to bring a phone and earbuds. Artist Daniël Heynen has placed QR codes next to various objects. Scanning these codes allows you to listen to an audio clip explaining the artwork.
