The glass negatives contain a wealth of information about the workings of the studios of Roermond-based architect and designer Pierre Cuypers.
Early on, around 1860, Cuypers, as an entrepreneur, took advantage of the opportunities that photography could offer his business. This underscores Cuypers’ affinity for innovation and his shrewd entrepreneurship. He used prints of the glass negatives to bring his work and his range of art objects to the public’s attention. Catalogs and flyers were intended to convince potential buyers. Photography was also a convenient way to quickly document a building (in need of restoration) rather than making detailed sketches.
For the first time, part of this “treasure” is on display. You’ll also see original photographs, catalogs from Cuypers’ studio, and explanations of the restoration process.
